Dick passed away peacefully on February 22, 2013 at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Sarah and 20 siblings. In 2008, Dick was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Valda. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Whalley (Jeff), son Rick (Karen), grandchildren Jamie, Sean, Samantha, Cole and Heidi, and his only remaining sibling Hilda Baresinkoff (Walter) of Calgary. Also surviving Dick are his sisters-in-law Helen Reimer and Pauline Reimer of Saskatoon, Laura (George) Comiskey, brothers-in-law Joe (Bette) Querin and Leo (Liz) Querin.
Ditrich, known as Dick, was born on a farm near Rosthern, Saskatchewan. He worked at various farms living with his brother Abe. In 1943, he signed up for active duty with the Canadian Army. He trained as a sniper on the front lines seeing action in Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. After returning from duty, he headed out west to BC in 1947 with his sister and never looked back, as he had found 'God's Country'. Dick met his wife Valda and married in 1949. In 1955, they left Vancouver to live in a boxcar and work for the PGE on the Rock Gang. They travelled the rails for a year meeting many life-long friends before settling in Squamish, where they raised their family. Dick worked for BCR for 35 years before retiring.
Dick was a devoted family man; his family meant the world to him. He would, if given the chance, brag about his wife, children, grandchildren and siblings. He loved sports, especially curling, golfing, baseball and hockey. He participated in, coached and umpired many sports in Squamish. He loved to entertain, dance, play cards and humour people.
Dick will always be remembered for that twinkle in his eye, his mischievous grin, his jokes and how he made you smile and feel welcomed when you walked in a room.
Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 2:00pm at Ocean View Funeral Chapel (4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation Renal Clinic or St. Paul's Hospital Foundation Renal Clinic.
