November 16, 1958 – November 1, 2023
Our beloved mom, nonna, wife and friend passed away on November 1, 2023, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Doriana immigrated to Canada from Italy with her loving parents in 1964 at the age of five, and helped her family manage day-to-day life in Canada. As a child and the first in her family to learn English, she translated for her parents and took on responsibilities far beyond her years. As an adult, she balanced a demanding career and being a mother with caretaking for her parents and in-laws.
Doriana approached life with enthusiasm, tenacity, and compassion. She was beautiful, athletic and talented, and never met a challenge she didn’t think she could overcome.
It was only natural that she would excel in journalism, becoming a trailblazer for women in news. She had insightful interviews, quick thinking, and a dogged determination to get to the bottom of every story, and to do it right. She started in radio and soon made her way to TV news, working as a reporter, anchor and producer for the local broadcast, and founding member and news director for the national show. She cared about people as much as she cared about reporting the news, and even in retirement, was always looking out for and checking in with the people she worked with – many of whom became lifelong friends.
Doriana had an endless capacity for love and friendship. She had wonderful friendships forged in adolescence that only seemed to get stronger as the decades passed, and continued to build new meaningful friendships with colleagues, other parents and community members.
Family was of the utmost importance to Doriana. She was never happier than when she was hosting family gatherings, the aroma of Northern Italian cooking filling the air. She leaves behind her husband Michael Hall, children Justine Hall (Alexandre Balay) and Jacob Hall (Molly), precious grandchildren Mario and Gemma Balay and Kennedy Caverly-Hall, and cousins in Canada and Italy.
She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and loved her.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Helen’s Parish, 3860 Triumph St. Burnaby, BC at 11am, Thursday, November 9, 2023. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation: https://donate.bccancerfoundation.com/
