Garvin, affectionately known to his family as “G”, died peacefully on Sunday, December 29th, 2019 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 48 years young.

G was born in Victoria, BC to Yen & May Chan. He is the youngest of four children. Along with his wife, Michelle and his parents, G will be missed dearly by his older brother Roger (Carolyn), his sisters, Lana and Wendy (Richard); Michelle’s parents, Pao Yuan & Suen Fung Cheng, her brothers & sister, Mike (Si Si), Marlene (Ronnie) and Matt (Cam). G was a loving Uncle and was adored by his many nephews and nieces on both sides of the families: Matthew, Megan, William, Chloe, Alex and Ben; Aidan, Megan, Emily, Kailey, Ava, Paige and Ian. He will also be missed by his Aunts, Uncles, cousins in Australia and long-time friends from Vancouver and around the world.

Garvin graduated with a B.A.Sc. (Metals and Materials) from the Faculty of Engineering at UBC. Soon after, he started working at Russell Metals and eventually moved into his current position as Project Leader at Kadant Carmanah Design. G was a dedicated employee who was deeply committed to his job and enjoyed working with his colleagues.

G met and married Michelle with the help of their Moms who brought G and Michelle together. Unbeknownst to him, the love of his life, Michelle, lived only two houses away, across the alley, from his house in Vancouver. They shared a love for food and a passion for travel. Their many trips to Southeast Asia and Europe were the highlight of their travels together. They built a wonderful life together, surrounded by many close friends and family who they enjoyed spending time with, whether entertaining at home or on holiday camping trips.

G had a lifelong passion for cars, especially Porsches and BMWs. He amassed a vast collection of model cars and was deeply knowledgeable of all things car-related. As a young man, he would spend hours looking at catalogues (pre-internet days) of different models and makes of cars. When all this information moved online, he could be found in front of his computer continuing this hobby. He also shared this passion for cars with his childhood friend, Don. They never missed a car show and often saw these events as their “happy place”. Just months before his passing, G finally acquired his dream car – a white Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS.

G was the most loyal of friends, especially to his childhood friend, Don, and to Marcus, whom he met while studying at UBC. Don and his partner, David, spent many years travelling with G and Michelle, visiting exotic locales and savouring the local food. Many of their travel pictures would always include images of mouth-watering, local cuisine. We are grateful to Don, David, Marcus, Novella, May, Ken, Ann, Vince, Mary, Amy, Mimi and many others for their unwavering friendship, love and support during G’s illness.

G’s family also extends their heartfelt thanks to the health-care professionals at Mount St. Joseph Hospital, BC Cancer Agency and St. Paul’s Hospital for their care and compassion to G and Michelle during his battle with cancer.

When you think of G, celebrate and cherish the good memories you have of him. Remember that life is fragile and short and that we should live our lives to the fullest.
