OBITUARY

Gene Sai Tak Chan

September 21, 1942September 27, 2019

Gene Sai Tak Chan died peacefully on September 27, 2019 in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, at the age of 77. Gene was born in the Guangdong Province of Swatou, China, in 1942. At the age of 7, he escaped the civil war in China to Hong Kong where he attended Pui Ying Secondary School and Chung Chi College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from which he graduated in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Shortly after, he met Lily Shek, and they were married for 50 years.

Gene entered into the civil service with the Hong Kong Government in the Social Welfare department and worked there for over 16 years including a 10-year secondment to the United Nations. After immigrating to Canada in 1987, Gene became a real estate broker.

Gene is survived by his devoted wife, Lily Shek; his children, Andre Chan and Arlene Chan; his son-in-law Robert Gee and grandchildren Caitlin and Ian Gee.

Gene’s greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends, and especially traveling with his grandchildren. He loved practicing the martial art of Tai Chi, and was an avid photographer. He was an active sailor and tennis player in his youth, and a golfer in his golden years. He loved playing bridge, and mah jong with his friends, and never missed the daily Sudoku. Gene also enjoyed music all his life and played the classical acoustic guitar and harmonica.
