Dr. Gene Wong

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather who left us peacefully while surrounded by his loving family. Son of Jim Choon and Mae Quon Wong and stepmother Hop Lin Woo. He is survived by his wife Julia, his children, Juliana, Jennifer (Alan), Judy (Roth), Jacqueline, Eugene (Carol), Gerry (Sara), and five grandchildren, Sabrina, Alix, Ryan, Andrew and Laura.

Gene had many siblings. He was predeceased by his brothers Ying Chun, Hon Ding, Dong Gai, Duncan, and Jack; his sisters Mabel Ngo (Charlie), and Helena Chow (Peter); half brothers Tommy, Don, and Horne; half sister Eileen Allen (Frank); sister-in-law Helen, and brother-in-law Frank Woo. Gene is survived by his brothers Joe and Fong (Mabel); half brothers Kye (Mary), Boe (Eleanore), and Lloyd (Pearl); half sister Doreen Woo; sisters-in-law Lynne, Dolly, and Margaret and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

We are so proud of his many accomplishments and contributions. Born in Banff, Alberta, he also lived in China in his youth. From his humble beginnings his accomplishments include being Acadia University's first graduate of Chinese descent. Gene made a lasting impact internationally by developing opportunities for students from abroad. For his efforts, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law from Acadia University in 1996, which also opened the Wong International Centre on its campus.

His generosity, positive attitude and support touched so many lives throughout his life. He was such an inspiration and left a legacy of awe. His laughter and passion for life will resonate in our hearts and memories forever. He lived life to the fullest and will be remembered for his indomitable spirit, perpetual jokes and unique stories. We will all miss him dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:28 – 3:30 pm Saturday October 30, 2010 at Hollyburn Country Club, 950 Cross Creek Road, West Vancouver, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 1216 West Broadway, Vancouver, B.C. V6H 1G6, 604.736.4088.
