COOK, Gertrude Anna (Goebel)
Gertrude was born on November 9, 1920 on the family farm in Neudorf, Saskatchewan, where she learned the value of hard work. Gertie was the third youngest of thirteen children. Two siblings died in infancy. She left home around age nineteen and headed west where she made her home in Vancouver. She began working as a window glazier during WWII when women were needed in unconventional roles. Gertie met her husband, William, while attending Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and they were married on July 2, 1949. God blessed them with three children: Robert, Carol, and Kenneth. Gertie stayed in Vancouver until 2006 when she moved to Parkwood Manor in Coquitlam.
Gertie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be remembered for her beautiful garden, excellent baking, delicious preserves and kind heart. Gertie enjoyed singing in the choirs at Bethlehem Lutheran and Parkwood Manor. Her faith in God sustained her through many difficult times.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bill; granddaughter, Cheryl; son, Kenneth; her parents, Jacob and Elizabeth; and all her siblings. She will be dearly missed by her son Robert (Susan), daughter Carol (Ken) and daughter-in-law Carol; grandchildren Lisa (Cameron), Bill (Melissa), Ernie, Angela (Tyler), John (Tiffany), and Christina (David); great-grandchildren Jay, Mitchell, Jordan, Cash, Maryn, Ayla, Aubrey, Avery, and Penny; many dear nieces and nephews; and friends from church and Parkwood Manor.
A very special thank you to the staff at Parkwood Manor, home support workers from Fraser Health, and the nurses and doctors at Eagle Ridge Hospital.
