Born December 29, 1921 in Nan Hoi, China, H.H. Ho was the youngest of 18 children to Kwok Choi Ho and Bo Yung Chin.
As a young man, H.H. Ho relocated to Macau with his family where he was encouraged to study Chinese medicine. His interest, however - was in entrepreneurship. It wasn’t long into his journey before he won the heart of the beautiful girl upstairs. It was love at first sight! Shuk-Yee Cheng became his beloved wife on December 16, 1940 and together raised 11 children.
In 1960, H.H. Ho moved to Hong Kong with his wife and 11 children. With the support from his brothers, he started a business selling raw cowhide – later incorporating leatherette. He learned the hardships of being an entrepreneur and the struggles of getting a business off the ground. Persistence paid off, and business finally took off. Through his success, H.H. Ho was a father above all else who believed in family first.
In 1980, at the age of sixty, H.H. Ho decided it was time to enjoy life with his wife and took retirement in Vancouver. He entrusted his Tai Ping legacy to his sons and spent the latter part of his life travelling the world, indulging in the finest foods, and most importantly- spending time with family. All who crossed paths with him would have appreciated his generosity of spirit and his undeniable sense of humour. Times change but the one thing that remained constant was the Sugus candy in H.H. Ho’s pocket. It was a simple reminder; an encouragement that drove his success.
On February 12, 2018, H.H. Ho lost his courageous battle to Alzheimer. He is survived by 10 children, 21 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren who mourn his absence and generous nature. His memory will live through us…at a dim sum table…at a loud family gathering…at a mahjong table…we will celebrate his life.
