Hon Ming Chan was born in 1937 in Guangzhou, China. Growing up, he was a multi-talented individual, excelling in sports such as swimming and track and field, as well as in music, particularly playing the Chinese flute.
Hon Ming met the love of his life, Mau Shan Chan in high school, and they married shortly after graduation. Eager to support his family, he migrated to Hong Kong in 1957, then to Malaysia to work on a farm in 1958.
In 1960, Hon Ming returned to Hong Kong to reunite with his wife and daughter, Queenie. Their family then grew with the addition of their second daughter, Elke, followed by their third son, Joseph, and youngest son, Michael.
In Hong Kong, Hon Ming owned several popular businesses including an herbal tea house, a congee restaurant, and a Wonton noodle restaurant. In the 70s, he saw an opportunity to immigrate to Canada and in 1976; he decided to move his family to Vancouver, B.C. with a dream that they could all have a better life and greater opportunities.
Hon Ming enjoyed a successful career as a restaurateur where he opened his first restaurant in Vancouver "Mr. Chan's Kitchen". Over the years, he continued to launch and sell multiple prosperous businesses until his retirement in 2005.
During his retirement years, Hon Ming spent quality time with his wife at home, cooking meals, watching and reading current news, and tending to their home garden including their famous yellow plum tree. They frequently attended church together and both accepted Christ, and he was baptized at home in 2016.
In 2020, Hon Ming was admitted to Hamilton nursing home, where he received loving care from the staff and his dedicated personal caregiver, George.
On March 29, 2024 Hon Ming Chan passed away peacefully at the age of 86 at the Royal Columbian Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones and family during his last few days.
