It is with profound sadness that I announce the sudden passing of my beloved wife, and my son's forever Mom, Hsin-Ping (Sylvia) Yu.
Sylvia courageously faced and battled cancer since 2023, but her sudden departure from complications has deeply devastated her family and close friends.
Born and raised in Keelung, Taiwan, Sylvia moved with her parents to North Vancouver in 1994. She earned a bachelor degree from National Taipei University (aka Chung-Hsing Law and Commerce), and later pursued a Master of Public Administration at the University of Victoria. Before joining the Immigration Refugee Board (IRB), where she served for 22 years, Sylvia worked in various other roles including at S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
Predeceased by her parents Yean-Wen Yu and Kui-Lan Shao, Sylvia is survived by her devoted husband, Kuo-Wei (Omar) Hung and her son, Owen Hung. She is also surrounded with love by her brother, Chih-Ping and his family, Wen-Chin, Hwua-En, Tien-En, and Chia-En. She will be remembered by all of us as a smart, beautiful, talented, compassionate, warm, humorous, and hard-working Mother, Wife, Sister, Aunt, Friend, and Colleague.
In lieu of flowers, you are encouraged to donate to the Oncology unit at Lions Gate Hospital or to the BC Cancer Foundation in Sylvia's memory.
A visitation and viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 20, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Burnaby.
This will be a gentle, informal time to remember and honour Sylvia — a chance for family and her closest friends and colleagues to reflect on her life and the memories we shared.
As the space is limited to 50 guests, this gathering will focus on family and Sylvia’s closest circle. While not entirely private, we ask for your understanding in helping us keep this an intimate moment of remembrance.
There will be no formal speeches or ceremony, just quiet moments together over tea, coffee, and water. You are welcome to arrive and leave at any time during the two-hour period.
The urn burial will take place on Wednesday, August 27, at 2:00 PM at the same location. This will mainly be for family, though friends who wish to attend are welcome.
Thank you for your kindness, support, and love during this time of loss.
Sylvia will be forever loved and remembered.
