After completing secondary school, James studied medicine at the University of Hong Kong. With the onset of war, the university evacuated to Chungking, China, where James finished his studies and graduated in 1946. After post graduate studies in the UK, James commenced a medical career in Malaysia and Singapore as a general surgeon and family doctor.
In 1951, he married the love of his life, Alice Ho (who passed away in 1977) and they had two wonderful children, daughter Jane (who passed away in 2007) and son John. In 1976, James retired from medical practice and immigrated with his family to Canada, settling in Burnaby, BC.
James reinvented himself as a realtor which allowed him to continue with his life's passion – helping others. Throughout his life, James was involved in countless community and volunteer endeavours, including Rotary Clubs, Meals On Wheels, Freemasons and Toastmasters. He was a paragon of kindness, an eternal optimist, always friendly and generous with his time to help those in need. James deeply loved and cared about his family including his siblings, nephews, and nieces.
Given his background as a health professional, James was always interested in promoting good health. Along the way, he even published a book to share his ideas on health and wellness with others. One could say that he followed his own advise, leaving us after just marking his 97th year.
James is survived by son John Yap, daughter-in-law Suzanne Yap, son-in-law Daryl Tan and four grandchildren; Justin Tan (Jennifer Huang), Trevor Tan, Lisa Yap, and Michael Yap.
