Jean will be forever loved and dearly missed by her children Jenny (Bob) Milne, Launi (Donald) Gee, and Bert (Jacquie) Price; her grandchildren Amber, Jordan, Stephen (Kyla), Erin, Angela, Taylor (Xander), and Paris; and her great-grandchildren Tyson and Rylee. She also leaves behind her beloved brother Donald (Angela) Bell of Calgary, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
She was predeceased in 1977 by her beloved son, Stephen Charles Price.
Jean was born at Burnaby Nursing Home to Magistrate Charles Clare and Jessie Jane Bell. Her great-grandfather, Reverend William Bell, was minister of Christ Church in Surrey Centre, now a designated heritage church.
Jean attended Inman Avenue and Burnaby South schools. A gifted athlete and performer, she excelled in sports and track, and starred in the high school operetta Waltz Dream alongside her brother Donald. She won numerous awards in Vancouver Music Festivals, sang in Theatre Under the Stars, portrayed “Judy” on CBC School Broadcast in 1952, and earned a music scholarship to the Toronto Conservatory in 1954. In 1961, she understudied Madame Bette Bjorling and performed the Friday night lead in the Vancouver Opera Players' production of La Forza del Destino.
After graduating from high school, Jean trained as an elementary school teacher and went on to teach at Inman Avenue, Marlborough, and Stride Avenue schools. She later married her high school sweetheart, Bert Price, and together they had four children. Following the end of their marriage, Jean continued to raise the children in the family’s Peter Street home, where she lived for 63 years—from 1957 until 2020. After her divorce, she rejoined the workforce at Super Valu stores, where she spent 24 years, including 10 years as deli manager at Park Royal. In 2020, she moved—reluctantly—from her home to a retirement residence at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A passionate golfer, Jean was a proud member of the Wednesday Ladies at Fraserview Golf Course, achieving a 14 handicap. She also spent many Sundays on the course and, after retiring from play, continued to enjoy watching golf on TV.
Family gatherings and lunches with friends were her happiest times. She was well-known for her thoughtful cards and handwritten letters, always remembering birthdays and special occasions. Choosing just the right card for each person brought her great joy.
Rest in peace, Mom. We love you forever.
