May 1, 1929-April 18, 2026
Joyce was born and raised in her east Vancouver home, in a friendly neighbourhood with lots of families and children. Mom adored her loving parents, Harold Ross Egan, and Marguerite Taylor Egan (Hardy), her brothers, George Harold Egan and Stan Egan, grandparents, aunties and uncles. She often talked about her wonderful, carefree childhood. This is where she met and made lifelong friendships: Gertrude, Ruby, Penny, Lena, just to name a few. Mom went to school at Lord Nelson Elementary and Templeton Secondary in Vancouver. In 1957, she purchased a home in Burnaby, and started a family, where she resided until 1996. She then bought a condo and lived in New Westminster.
Joyce is predeceased by one son, Stephen Sinclair MacLean, and survived by daughter, Linda Clements, and two sons, Brian and Barry MacLean, special granddaughter, Kimberley Clements, two adoring great grandchildren, Addilyn and Emilia, special family friend, Marilyn Arsenault in California, and many wonderful caring and thoughtful nieces and nephews. "Love of a family is life's greatest blessing" is what we grew up seeing on her kitchen wall every day. She welcomed people into her family with open arms and an open heart.
Joyce brought joy to everyone each day with her gentle, loving, caring, and giving spirit. She was generous and kind, modest and humble, never seeking pomp and circumstance. She treasured her many lifelong friendships maintained over decades. Among these were Sterling condo manager, Debbie, and all her friends at Sterling, who were so special to her, as were the daily coffee meet ups across the street at the Royal City Centre Mall with her many friends. We thank Elaine, who lived at Sterling, and Debbie for helping us navigate the earlier years of mom's dementia. Great thanks must also be extended to Kim, who lovingly helped her grandma by being present for her, driving her to appointments, shopping with her, for being not only a granddaughter, but also a great friend.
Music and singing were something she loved. Back in the day with her parents, brothers, friends and neighbours, there would be gatherings at her home, with mom playing the piano and singing, while her father played the mandolin and her brother(s) the violin, along with accompaniments from countless others.
Her mother, Marguerite, would hold the crochet and knit circles with all the ladies invited into their home. Mom was an avid knitter who made many baby shower gifts of sweaters, complete with matching bonnets and booties, for new moms to be and their babies. She also knitted sweaters for her children, with matching skirts for her daughter!
We would also like to acknowledge and thank lead Gord, Angel, and the many friends who welcomed us at the Heritage Grill UKE Club and club owner Paul Minhas, for the great spot for our weekly song circles. We had our special seats right up front in front of the musicians. Mom was so much fun with her singing, uke and kazoo playing! Her favourite song, "Dirty old Town", was a song from 1946, and was in one of the club's song books.
Mom loved birds. Her father had an aviary in their backyard and raised and sold budgies. Mom had always put a dish of water on her balcony for the songbirds, and they came daily to flutter about and bathe in. Mom was cognizant of the high-rise windows and careful that songbirds would not fly into them. Mom loved puttering around in her balcony garden, carefully curating and watering her plants. Her favourite flowers that we would adorn her with at this time of year were Lilacs, Lily of the Valley, and Sweet Peas.
We would like to extend a special "Thank You" to the care team at Fairhaven Burnaby Lodge for the wonderful care and love they provided to our mom over the years she spent there. They were her loving family until the end.
In the end, Mom wanted us all to know that she was happy, and that she loved us all.
Inurnment will take place at Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street in Burnaby on May 1st 2026 at 12:30.
