Juan is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, in Vancouver, his son, Richard, in Vancouver, his daughter Margaret and her husband Dietrich, in Maryland, and by his son Michael and his wife Miranda, and their three children Matthew, Mark, and Martin, in Richmond.
Juan was born in 1936 in the Philippines. In 1960, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Fordham University in New York and worked at the family business in Davao, Philippines.
In 1981, he and his family moved to Vancouver, Canada, where he retired and volunteered at his parish church, serving as a Eucharistic minister and participating in the parish council. He also volunteered at Youville, serving as a driver to take the seniors in that residence to their appointments.
Juan loved listening to music, ranging from classical to popular songs of the ’50s and ’60s. In his youth, he was an active athlete, the captain of Fordham’s fencing team during his college years, and an enthusiast in various sports such as basketball, pelota, tennis, and running.
Juan will be missed by his friends and family. He will be remembered as the elder brother who put his younger siblings, eight in all, through high school and college after his father passed away, and who raised his family of four children. A convert to Catholicism in his teens, he spread the faith to his siblings, family, and relatives. He was a benefactor who gave generously to those in need. And in his later years, he gave time back to his Creator, spending many silent hours in Eucharistic adoration.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for 1030am on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Immaculate Conception parish church, 3778 West 28th Ave, Vancouver, followed by burial at Ocean View cemetery, 4000 Imperial St, Burnaby, at 2 pm on the same day. There will also be a viewing and prayers, from 7 pm to 9 pm on Friday, January 13, 2023, at the same church.
