Lauro passed away peacefully at Nicola Lodge in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at the age of 91.
Lauro was born in Cusignana, Treviso, Italy in 1932 to Umberto Favaro and Luigia (Marchiori). Lauro had two brothers, Narciso and Gino, and four sisters, Cesira, Gelinda, Delia, and Maria. Lauro came to Canada in 1952 when his Uncle (Zio) Guido Marchiori and his sister Cesira loaned him money for the trans-Atlantic boat ticket to Halifax. He took the train from Halifax to Vancouver with $20 in his pocket and for five days he just drank coffee. Lauro met his Uncle Guido at 9 am on April 1 at the Vancouver train station.
Lauro found work after a week at Grange Mattress making $1 per hour. Over time, he repaid his uncle and his sister for the travel loan. Lauro found additional work in those early days by setting pins at the Chapman’s bowling alley for $3-$4 per night.
It was at a dance at the Arcadian Hall on Main Street where he met Frances Szezpanski, who he married in 1957. Lauro and Frances bought a house on 22nd Avenue in Vancouver and had two sons, James and Danni. In the late 1960’s, Lauro worked as a mechanic’s helper at a logging camp near Port Hardy, BC. Upon returning to Vancouver, Lauro worked at Sealy Mattress and Simmons Mattress companies. Lauro and Frances also owned and managed rental properties all their lives and worked very hard in maintaining and growing their business.
