Lawrence was born on July 7, 1934 in HongLuDai, Toisan, Kwangtung, China to Shu Ling and Kung York Poy. He reunited with his father when he and his mother came to Nelson, BC, Canada in 1951. In 1958, on a trip to Hong Kong, he met the love of his life King Fai (Faye). They would marry in 1959. Later that year, returning to Nelson with his wife, they would start a family.
For most of his life, he lived in Nelson. From a young age he started working at his father’s restaurant, the Diamond Grill in the 1950’s. In 1980, he opened the King’s Family Restaurant and ran the business until retiring in 2000. In 2013, he moved to Vancouver, BC to be near his family.
Lawrence was a kind and loving family man. He had a passion for music. He played the clarinet, saxophone, banjo and yangqin. Oftentimes, he enjoyed playing Classical Chinese music on his banjo. He was a wonderful cook. When called upon for many family gatherings, he would make his amazing roast turkey and his delicious apple pies.
He will be missed by his wife King Fai; children June, Gary, Daniel (Debbie) and grandchildren Sophie and Liam; brother Allen (Lynn) and nieces Emily and Rebecca; cousins Woo Shun, James (Woo Oak) and families in Ottawa.
We would like to thank the doctors and staff at the BC Cancer Agency for their care of our father.
