Margaret Dorothy Peters (always known to her family as “Dolly“) was born in Grace Hospital, Vancouver on September 13, 1936 - the daughter of the late Thomas Mullard and Margaret P. Mullard. Dolly passed away in her sleep in the early morning of Sunday, April 11, 2021 in the Palliative Care Unit of Vancouver General Hospital.
Margaret (Dolly) grew up on West 28th Avenue in the Mackenzie Heights area of Vancouver and attended Lord Kitchener Elementary School and Kitsilano High School, graduating in 1954. While at school she made many long-term friends, some of whom she kept in regular contact with for more than 70 years, until shortly before her death. She treasured her friends, especially Carole and Anne.
After attending secretarial school she worked in the offices of the Faculty of Commerce at UBC for a few years. In 1960 she started working as a financial statements typist in the offices of McIntosh, McVicar and Dinsley, a firm of Chartered Accountants in downtown Vancouver, where she met her future husband, Brian Peters, who was an articling CA student working at the same firm.
Margaret and Brian were married on December 20, 1961 and had a loving marriage for more than 59 years. She gave birth to two very loved sons, Donald (Don) in 1963 and Robert (Bob) in 1965.
Margaret was predeceased by both of her parents. She is survived by her husband, Brian; by her sons, Don in Vancouver, and Bob in Campbell River; and by her daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and granddaughters, Emily and Sarah, all in Campbell River. She is also survived by her sister, Marilyn Christian, and by her brother, Tom Mullard (Jean), and by numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Margaret had her share of health problems over the years, including “multiple system atrophy”, which she probably suffered from for 4 or 5 years, but was only clearly diagnosed about a year ago. This affliction gradually took away her ability to walk, her ability to use her hands, her ability to talk or swallow, and finally her ability to breathe.
Through all this, she received wonderful and compassionate care from the doctors and nurses from Vancouver Coastal Health and from Vancouver General Hospital. For the past 9 months she has been receiving 4 visits a day at home from home support workers from VCH, more than a thousand such home visits in total. All these workers have been excellent, but we in particular wish to thank the VCH home care nurse “Joti”, our long-time family doctor Dan Ezekiel, the nurses, Doctor Majeed and Doctor Cline in the Palliative Care Unit. Their humanity and compassion made Margaret’s final weeks more bearable.
Margaret was a lovely person, an excellent wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be missed.
Because of the Covid pandemic, we will not have a funeral service at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
