Margaret Wong

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Margaret Wong. She passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 at her home in Burnaby at the age of 92 years old.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband George, her parents Yut & Dack Suey Lim as well as her sisters Martha and Helen (Larry). She is survived by her sister Marion (Dick) as well as her children Terry (Esther), Robert (Kay), Gordon (Mina) and Patricia. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kevin, Krystal, Kyle, Eric and Alan plus many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Unfortunately the status of her brother George (Joan) is unknown.

Margaret was born on November 12, 1931 in Victoria, BC and grew up in Winnipeg, MB. The family moved back to BC and settled in Vancouver when she was 14 years old. Margaret met George in their twenties and they married in 1961. They moved to Burnaby and raised their four children in the Brentwood area where they lived out the rest of their lives. Margaret supported her children’s activities by volunteering and driving them (plus other kids) to their activities, especially with Burnaby Minor Hockey Association and Coquitlam Figure Skating Club. She could always be seen knitting something while watching her kids play hockey, lacrosse or practicing figure skating. There were many kids with sweaters and hats made by her in the different club colours. She also founded the Brentwood Chinese School for children in the area to learn Cantonese. After the children grew up, Margaret went back to work as an admin assistant at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

In retirement, Margaret enjoyed travelling the world with George and their friends. She was also an avid walker and belonged to the Brentwood Mall Walkers where she would walk around the mall every morning. Even after the program ended, she walked there almost every morning and went for coffee afterwards with her friends up until her death. She also enjoyed cooking big family dinners and baking. She would collect recipes from newspapers, magazines and friends to try and experiment with. But being a grandmother brought her the most joy and loved to watch and hear about all their activities.

Margaret will be remembered for her friendliness, warm welcoming heart and telling stories about her children and grandchildren. Also for her energy and independence all the way up until the end. We all hope to be as full of life as she was when we are 92.

There will be a private viewing for the immediate family only and a Celebration of Life is being planned.
