Melvin Pan Phee Louie, cherished father, grandfather, and husband, passed away in Richmond, BC on Monday, November 17, 2025. Melvin was born in Toishan, China on February 2, 1941, the third of seven children born to San Fung and Fat Nung. At 14, Melvin moved to Canada by himself with only a small orange suitcase and $100 in his pocket. Through sheer tenacity, he built a life for himself in the prairies, while continuing to be a dutiful and loving son.
In 1971, Melvin travelled to Hong Kong to marry Grace. They returned to Canada and eventually settled in Edmonton, where they provided their two daughters with much love, drama, and opportunities. Melvin worked diligently to ensure his little family was comfortable and would not face the same hardships he endured. Although Melvin found it hard to show his affection, he adored his wife and children, and enjoyed making kids laugh with his playful humour. He loved watching game shows such as Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Pyramid, poker, and sports in any language he could find it in (hockey and curling were favourites), while indulging in cheezies and potato chips. Aside from his family, his prized possessions were his comb, a comfy couch, and the TV remote.
Melvin will be lovingly remembered by his daughters: Beayue and Beajay (Shervin), his grandchildren: Kiana and Jian, and many of his friends and family far and wide, including the Neufeld’s who were like family to Melvin. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that donations be made to the Richmond Hospital Foundation in Melvin’s honour.
