Pak Wing Jung

January 3, 1931June 19, 2020

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Pak Wing, age 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend.

He is survived by his loving wife (So Sou), much-loved children, Les (Catherine), David (Shelley), Larry, Sharon (Wade), Charlene (Mark) and treasured grandchildren, Greg (Britney), Jordan (Jade), Kyle, Kaitlyn, and Leanna.

Pak Wing was born on January 3, 1931 in Kwangtung, China and immigrated to Canada in 1956. He married So Sou in 1958 and they raised 5 children. He worked at several plywood mills during his career and when the mill closed in 1989, he was able to retire at 58. He had the time to enjoy doing the things he loved, spending time with his family, cooking, going for his daily walks around the neighbourhood, volunteering in Chinatown, watching sports and playing mah jong. He always focused on family first, which was his number 1 priority. One of his greatest joys was being able to help raise his youngest granddaughter.

He was kind-hearted, had a wonderful sense of humour, and was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He endeared himself to people with his friendly demeanor, funny antics, and caring nature. He could be seen going for his daily walk to the coffee shop, wearing his newsboy hat, waving at the merchants and chatting with the neighbours as he passed by. He loved hosting large family gatherings where he would spend hours cooking everyone’s favorite foods. Then he would stand upstairs, by the window waiting for all of us to arrive. We knew if we were late, he would be calling. He also enjoyed his desserts, baked by one daughter and getting treats from the other. Of course, no family gathering would be complete without a few rounds of mah jong with his sons and more recently, with his youngest grandson. His enjoyment of mah jong has extended out to his grandchildren, and his oldest grandson and wife are also starting to play.

On July 2019, he had a major stroke, which later brought him to the Point Grey Private Hospital. He fought to hang on but eventually passed away at 9:15pm on June 19, 2020. During this hard last year of his life, he still held on to his sense of humour and kept a brave attitude for his family. He was still able to spend a lot of quality time with his children and grandchildren. We would like to thank all the staff for the wonderful care they provided especially Carrol, who kept us connected through FaceTime calls and was there for him when we couldn’t be during the pandemic. It really meant so much to all of us.

Dad/Yeh Yeh/Goong Goong: We love you so very much and we miss you every day but we know that you are in a better place. Your legacy will live on. Rest in Peace, sweet man.

Due to the social distancing restrictions, a private family service will be held at Ocean View on Monday, July 6 at 1:00pm.
