It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Ping Cheung CHAN (陳炳銓) on March 12, 2019, in Vancouver at the age of 95. Dr. Chan passed away peacefully at home, where he was surrounded by his children in the last days of his life. He left us just 18 days after the passing of his wife, Dr. Sun Sing Woo Chan. They were meant to be together forever.
He is survived by his children, Elsa Shuk Yee, Isaac Man Hang (Silvian Tong), Cindy Kar Yee (Wolfram Lunscher), and Louise Lok Yee (Tom Ma); and grandchildren Eugene Lunscher, Nolan Lunscher, and Stephanie Chan.
Dr. Chan was born on November 18, 1923, in Hong Kong. He graduated from Pui Ying Middle School in Hong Kong in 1941 and from Lingnan University’s School of Medicine in Canton in 1950. He married Dr. Sun Sing Woo, one of his classmates in medical school, in 1952. He was a physician and surgeon and had a private practice as a family doctor first in Hong Kong and later in Vancouver, after immigrating to Canada in 1968. He became a Canadian citizen in 1974. He retired in 1993, at the age of 70.
His family remembers him as a quiet and unassuming man who was always kind to others and who loved Tang poetry and Chinese history and opera. For many years he maintained two offices in Vancouver, one near the University of British Columbia and the other in Chinatown, serving both communities. He continued to make house calls even after they became less common, and he treated many patients from among the less fortunate population around Main and Hastings.
In Vancouver, Dr. Chan enjoyed regular meals and activities with his friends and former classmates from the alumni associations of Pui Ying Middle School, Lingnan University, and True Light Middle School (his wife's school). He was a director of the Lingnan Elder College. He also served as president of the Vancouver Pui Ying Alumni Association for two terms and as a director on the board of the Pui Ying Christian Services Society from 1992 to 2007.
A celebration of life will take place at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, B.C., on Friday, April 5, 2019, at 10 a.m.
