Master Chung was a man of infinite patience and grace.  I am forever grateful to have studied T'ai Chi as his student.

I met Master Raymond Chung in 1975 when I moved from Toronto to Vancouver.  I had trained in various martial arts for 10 years and was looking for a Tai Chi master.  I had a very good friend who studied Tai Chi in Toronto and I noticed both his health and also his martial art really improved from his Tai Chi training.

I found Master Raymond Chung the ideal Master just like you see in the movies. He was very wise and very gentle in his teaching.  He taught every student personally one on one and then they practiced with the other students when his private session with you was over. 

Many of the students I trained with were very excellent both in their martial art and in their personality.

Today, 40 years later, I still practice the Tai Chi that I learned from Master Raymond Chung.  I moved to Victoria at some point and fortunately he also offered classes here at the YMCA. After class we all used to go to a Chinese restaurant called Foo Hong's to eat.  

Good martial art schools tended to do this because  a master and his students were always like a closely knit family. I had experienced that also in Toronto where I studied another Chinese martial art.

I would say that Master Raymond Chung inspired me for a lifetime in martial art and also to always be a good person to help others as best as I can. 

I remember Master Raymond Chung's cute English. In an exercise called Pushing hands there are three important things. One is that you never resist when a force pushes on you. He would state this idea with the phrase: "Don't against!" The next thing is that you only go back when you are pushed back. Not any earlier. Don't anticipate and move first. He would say: "Don't back too soon!" The third thing is that once you are in contact with an opponent or partner you never disengage the force. He would say: "Don't off."  Also for the movement "Fist under the elbow" it sounded like "Fish under the elbow."

Indeed he was a remarkable man.

Deepest condolences to the Chung family on the passing of Master Raymond Chung. I learned Tai Chi from him many years ago at the YMCA here in Victoria. He was a wonderful, patient caring teacher, much loved by all his students.
He had great energy and enthusiasm for sharing Tai Chi (He used to travel to Seattle and Victoria every week to teach).
For me he exemplified the Tai Chi spirit and lifestyle, always stressing healthy choices and relaxation and yielding (no against)! I do remember going to a fabulous Chinese banquet in Vancouver to celebrate the arrival in Canada of Master Chung's wife and son. There were Tai Chi demonstrations and really fabulous food. I was so pleased to be able to visit the club just after his last birthday and he was still pushing hands with everyone from his w/c. What an amazing man! He will be missed.

In 1975. At the age of 21 .
I started Tai Chi with Master Chung at the House on Inverness. 
I'd go three times a week as he was open on Wednesday ., Friday and Saturday afternoons. Saturday's were the best day to go as Master Chung would take a group of us to have Lunch in China Town. 
   As I came to know Master Chung better he guided me to achieve a mature path Well being.  By the end of the first year I had quit drinking., and smoking.
This Change in direction seemed a natural transition as my Tai Chi level was improving . I lost an additional 50 pounds and for the first time in my life I was at a resonable body weight. 
   When I thanked Master Chung for having influenced my life he said . "You Tai Chi very good. Keep practicing . " 
By the end of the third year, Another student and I Traveled with Master Chung to a Tai Chi Club in San Fransisco to do a demonstration at that Club. We spent two night there and two nights in Las Vegas to do another demonstration . 
Master Chung really enjoyed the Big Show at The Grand Hotel. 
   His impact has left a deep impression on me as he has been my Guide., My Teacher., my Friend for 43 years . 
     Once the Dali Lama had visited Vancouver ., and the entire City was on fire with the talk of The Universal Guru was here in our town. I was told I shouldn't miss the oppertunity to see The Dali Lama. 
"Meh , I said. I don't need to see The Dali Lama as I see my very own Universal Guru every weekend for free. At Master Chung's place. God Bless Master Chung R.I.P. Old Friend.
