Rick passed away peacefully on July 30, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. His final days were spent at the Salvation Army Rotary Hospice where he received excellent care. He is survived by his wife Lyce, daughter Antonia and grand-dog Chiquita all of whom love him very much.
Rick was born in Hong Kong in 1938 and attended HK’s La Salle College. He fell in love with Lyce as a teenager and they got married in Rosary Church January 2, 1965. Shortly after marriage they emigrated to Canada. In 1968 they were blessed with the arrival of their daughter Antonia.
Rick started his career as a Detective Inspector with the Hong Kong Police Force. After moving to Canada, he initially worked at Eaton's then joined Vancouver's Water Works Department where he worked for 28 years before retiring.
Rick was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus and served for several years as the Advocate in the Richmond Council 6855. He enjoyed being a member of the St. Paul Parish 12 noon Choir. He did lots of volunteer work and spent 20 years helping the parish’s Seniors’ Group. Rick was one of the Founding Fathers of the Casa de Macau Club (Vancouver). He served as their Vice-President and was a member of their Social Committee for nine years.
He was a devout Catholic with great faith who placed all trust in God. There is much gratitude for Fr. Thomas Smith and Lupina Kover who visited him to administer the Sacraments when he was very sick. Many thanks to everyone who prayed for Rick and his family during his illness.
Many amazing health professionals helped Rick live life to the fullest. Special thanks to Doctors Malcolm MacDonald, Thomas Lu, Alannah Smrke, Rebecca Schnurr-Howsam and Amrish Joshi who played huge roles providing care. Rick received excellent support from the Richmond Home Care Nurses, Angels There for You, Richmond Hospital's Palliative Unit and the Salvation Army Rotary Hospice House. The staff working for these agencies represent the best of humanity!
Special thanks to Barbara and George Muller, Dallas and Steve Smith, Ferdi and Blossom Sobrinho, Judit Haranghy, Tracy Stavem and Barbara Leong, the Richmond Public Health Leadership Team, Jane Guy, Joan Ouellette, Sandy Macleod, Hannah Greenway, Michelle Webster, Angela Lim, the Knights of Columbus and their spouses. Words cannot fully express the immense gratitude we have for your kindness and support.
Rick will be remembered as a great husband, a caring father and someone who pampered all his dogs. He was a loyal and respectful friend to many people.
Rest in peace, Rick. You lived a good life full of LOVE ❤️ and will be very missed.
