We are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of Robert Chimko in his family home on Monday, February 13th, 2023. Rob went peacefully and without pain; albeit much too soon. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Edna Chimko. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, children, Kaitlyn (Matt), Lauren, and Zachary, his siblings Debbie (Ernie), Les (Myrna), and Charlene, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Maria and Jose Oliveira - all of whom love him dearly. Rob is also survived by two nieces, Heather (Greg and their son Liam) and Vanessa, his nephew Jason, many cousins, and extended family.
Rob grew up in east Vancouver and attended Gladstone High School followed by the pursuit of a business degree at UBC. He was outgoing, charismatic, athletic, and built a huge community around him from an early age. He started dating Liz at the age of 16 and they built an incredible life together. They were married at 24 and had three children: Kaitlyn (1991), Lauren (1992) and Zac (2004).
After sweeping sawmills during university Rob found his way into the lumber business. In 1991, he joined Dakeryn Industries where he would spend the rest of his career. He assembled a very strong team of Partners, ultimately became President of the company, and led its growth from 3 to 150 employees with operations across the globe. He wanted to build something great and take as many people along for the ride as possible and that is exactly what he did.
Rob truly lived his life to the fullest and never waited to enjoy it. He loved to fish, golf, travel and host gatherings. He enjoyed cooking for others and a good glass of wine or a cold Molson Canadian. He made a point of celebrating every holiday and milestone, even the small ones like Friday lunch or happy hour. He always found a way to bring people together and we were all excited to participate.
Rob will be deeply missed. The outpouring of support we have received since his passing has been extraordinary and we are proud that he has touched many lives. He will always be remembered for his generosity, kindness, positive attitude, and love for everyone around him.
In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a gesture of support his family will be collecting donations via gofundme to distribute to 2-3 organizations in his honor.
Alternatively, please feel free to donate to the charity of your choice in your/his name.
