Mrs. Ruth Kam Che Hui (nee Leung) was born in 1950 in Kaiping County, Guangdong Province, China. She was the eldest of four children born to Mr. Kwok-Leung Leung and Mrs. Chun Yip Lee. As the eldest child, Ruth was the best and bossiest “dai gaa ze” (big sister) to her siblings. Ruth moved to Hong Kong with her parents at the age of six. Ruth got baptised at the age of 16. She attended ELCHK Lutheran Secondary School and Martinson Memorial Lutheran Church. Ruth taught English and Music in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1974.
After settling in Vancouver, BC, Ruth switched her career to nursing. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Holy Family Hospital from the mid 1970s. Ruth started attending New Life Chinese Lutheran Church in 1974. Since then, she took great joy in serving in many ministries, especially in the music, children’s ministry, and mission’s programs. Ruth met her future husband Herbert in 1977 and was married in 1978. They welcomed their son Isaac in 1985 and their daughter Deborah in 1988. In 2011, she retired from nursing but stayed busy teaching music theory and ESL classes at her church and chasing her grandchildren. Ruth’s life’s dream of being a grandma came true when Cassie, Jeremy, and Leland were born in 2012, 2014, and 2016, respectively. Throughout the years, Ruth loved to praise God with her music, singing in many choirs. Most notably she sang with the Vancouver Oratorio Society for more than 25 years. Ruth is lovingly remembered as a “tiger mom” to her children, and a fun and educational grandmother.
Ruth is predeceased by her father Kwok-Leung and survived by her mother Chun Yip, her husband Herbert, her brothers Hareton (Joyce) and Tong, sister Tammy (Kenneth), her children Isaac (Renee), Deborah (Peter), and her grandchildren Cassie, Jeremy, and Leland. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Ruth will be dearly remembered as a tenacious, smart, and generous woman who was faithfully devoted to God, her community, and her family.
