My fondest memories of Uncle Sam include riding home in the back of his truck in the early 70s and stopping at Muzak to change those enormous large reels of audio tape. Miss Elder Sam for his kindness, love to everyone and his faithfulness to our Lord. When I think of Elder Sam, the verses from 2 Timothy 4:7-8 always in my mind. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing". Yes, Uncle Sam, you have fought for the good battle.

  Elder/"Uncle" Sam--Love and miss you but comforted to know that you are with our Lord with that twinkle of a smile. My heartfelt thanks for your faithful wisdom, love and leadership at Franklin all the years(and for sharing your popular curried beef recipe each potluck Sunday!)

Every time I sit on the pink plushy pews at church or eat curry, I will always be reminded of a very faithful smiling servant of God!

We still remember the days we moved back to Vancouver from Calgary.  It was 1983.  I started a new job in the bank and happened to serve a few Chinese international high school  students.  They explained to me how tough it was to be away from home and lived in a dormitory with space much smaller than they expected.  When I asked if they knew Jesus, they got excited and wanted to come to church with me.  I didn't know what to do.  We did not have a church to settle down yet.  Where was I going to take these students?  Elder Sam gladly accepted us -- a couple he briefly heard about but hadn't really met.  Sam kindly welcomed us together with half of a dozen high shool students, and allowed us to start a Sunday school class for them the first day we attended Franklin Church.  Thank you Sam for being so open and trusting, for always having a heart for the young people, and for your passion for the unsaved souls.  We do not know where these young men and women are anymore, but the Lord knows.  Pray that the seeds sown in their hearts would one day bear much fruits, and may these fruits increase to your account.

My earliest memory with Elder Sam was when I first went to FCGC and he took time to watch and help me finish my fish craft at VBS. I look up to see who this man was and all I saw was this warm, kind-hearted man who wouldn't stop smiling. He would usually drive us and give us the bumpy adventurous rides to church/places. I can't imagine how he put up with our loud singing and silly games in the car. He just played along and laughed with us and even teach us some French. He will forever be in my heart.

Dear Lau family, the service was wonderful and uplifting and reminded me of the 3 qualities Sam demonstrated and we all need to strive for and often forget but is important in our instant no commitment self absorbed society.  His example from day one when the Sam family arrived in Canada is not forgotten.  My father (Wah Wai) and mother (Yoke Lan) appreciated Sam and Pauline and we alway affectionately call him Uncle Sam from day one, he has been so generous and caring to us as new immigrants then.
The words "well done, good and faithful servant" come to my mind when I think of Sam and I am sure these are the first words he hears from our Master as he enters the Gates of Heaven.

Elder Sam will stay in our hearts forever. We will remember his warm smile and kindness, and we will cherish all the memories with him while we were at Franklin church.  We will see you again one day in heaven, Elder Sam!

Be at peace our loving Papa. Lay it all down; all your struggles and toils, all you heartaches and sorrows. It does not matter anymore. Just let it go and be at rest in the everlasting arm of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will ease your pain, He will sooth you soul, He will give you rest.
