DR. SAU WAH LAM 林秀華牙醫, had gone to his heavenly home on July 22, in his 85th year after 5 years’ of residence at Simon K. Y. Lee Seniors’ Care Home, and 10 years’ attending the adjunct Chieng’s Adult Day Centre. He was born and grew up in Hong Kong where he completed his high school education. He went to Taiwan, where he was accepted to study at National Medical Defence Centre, graduated in 1967 with a Dentistry Degree. He returned to Hong Kong & started his own Clinic since 1969. He married Jessie Childe in 1972. During his wife's early pregnancy in 1976, a bus had bumped onto her car, caused the tragic loss of their first and only twins. Recovering from their grief, he continued his dental practice till retirement at 1993. Meanwhile, his wife worked at the Hong Kong Government General Nursing School System as Nurse Educator, and later as the Senior Nurse Educator until 1994. They both immigrated to Canada and settled in Vancouver in 1995. As retiree, he enjoyed Chinese culture and lifestyle, including Calligraphy, Painting, Poetry & Literature. Those carefree years up till 2003 were interspersed by tours abroad that were marvelously recorded by his photography. When he was in Vancouver he would volunteer at the Alzheimer Society of B.C. (Chinese Branch), to help in the Chinese translation of the English factsheets & instruction brochures for patients & their families. He assisted at many activities of his alumni, local art galleries & some charitable events up to a month after his 80th Birthday, when he had to move into his long term residential care home.
We express our gratitude to the professional care of all the doctors, nurses, care aides and other staff for the quality care given to him throughout his declining health. We also thank Reverend Deacon Richard Chau from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Archdiocese of Vancouver, for the Vigil Prayer Services at the Chapel on Friday evening, and the Gravesite Committal Service on Saturday morning. We are deeply grateful to the foresight of my deceased mother: Mrs. Marie Childe and my dear sister Elsie Childe who had planned in advanced these final services for us. In addition, we thank his nephew Tommy Lam and his wife Lisa Lam for their timely guidance and devotion throughout my grief and confusion. We also treasure our wonderful home assistants: Brenda Li Yong Hong, Linda Ching-Yi Lin and Khuu Kim Mai, whose constant care had eased the many distress and discomforts of our declining years at home and wherever we went.
