Selina was born on January 20th, 1968 in Seria, Brunei to loving parents Catherine and Henry Yong. Selina and her family moved to Canada from Malaysia in June 1973. She grew up in East Vancouver, and attended Elementary school at St. Mary’s School and later Windermere Secondary School. After high school, Selina attended Vancouver Community College where she pursued her love for hair and make-up. She became a certified Hairdresser through the Cosmetologist’s Association of BC and began a career in which she remained dedicated throughout her life. Selina worked at various salons in both Vancouver and Coquitlam, and proudly started her own home based business “Selina’s Hair Art”. Throughout her professional years she built a loyal following of clients, many of whom became long-time friends. Selina’s friends knew her as an incredibly strong and independent woman with a kind heart and gentle soul that could captivate a room immediately.
Selina was the oldest of three children. She adored her two younger sisters and always cherished the relationship they had as a family. Selina was also a proud mother to two children who brought her immense joy and pride. Selina was very family oriented, and valued spending time hosting elaborate family dinners for aunts, uncles and cousins. Selina was a gifted cook and baker, who was well known for her delicious chocolate chip and shortbread cookies; and her curry puffs were a hit among friends and family. Selina was always thinking of others and her continuous generosity did not go unnoticed.
Selina’s hobbies included gardening, reading science fiction, following sci-fi shows, playing sci-fi games, doing crossword puzzles, and she enjoyed camping. Selina loved animals and had a deep love for dogs, especially the family dog, Teddy.
Selina is predeceased by her grandparents Peter Tet Choi Phung, Barbara Moi Thai Chen, Nyuk Fah Yong and Kiaw Chin.
Selina will be greatly missed by her parents, sisters Melinda and Jennifer, her two children, Kyra and Cade (Thorington), her children’s father Shane Thorington and her dog Teddy.
Selina was a beloved daughter, mother, sister and friend, she leaves behind many incredible memories which will be kept alive in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Forest Lawn Funeral Home, and a service will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday January 23rd at 10:00 am. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donation be made to the SPCA in honour of Selina Yong.
