OBITUARY

Mrs. Siew Lan Gan

November 3, 1959November 20, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Janet Gan (Siew Lan Gan - 顔秀蓮) announces her sudden passing on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at the age of 62.

Janet was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia to her parents, Tai Seong Lai and Yoon Moi Choon. Janet is the second youngest of her seven siblings.

Due to the family financial hardship, Janet began working at the early age of twelve. She would attend work after school, sewing shoes with her mother. She took on the responsibility of feeding the family chickens and cooking for her family after returning from work. After cooking and cleaning, she still managed to complete her homework before going to bed.

After successfully completing Form 5 (High School), Janet landed a job selling napkins to restaurants and hawker stalls. Despite not having any sales experience, she impressively climbed her way to become the top saleswoman of her company.

In 1982 she moved to Winnipeg to attend The University of Manitoba, Class of 1986. During her time at the university, Janet met the love of her life and best friend, Calvin Why-Meng Gan. They married in 1986 and ultimately settled in Vancouver in 1990.

As a mother of three, Janet ensured her children, Catherine, Kevin, and Jeffrey, had the opportunity to be successful by enrolling them in many extracurricular activities, such as piano, swimming, and Kumon. However, her son Jeffrey was unique and diagnosed with autism at an early age. As the dedicated mother that she was, Janet researched schools, spoke with consultants, and built a team to support him. Janet insisted on being a mother first and eventually left her job to focus on raising and supporting her children. By virtue of her ability to converse in multiple languages, she began her new career as a home-office accountant.

She is adored and survived by her husband of 35 years, Calvin; children, Catherine (Robin), Kevin and Jeffrey; grandchildren, Cody; siblings Edwin, Frank, William, Billy, Susan, and Rosemary; and numerous other family members and friends.

The visitation will be held on Sunday, December 5th, 2021 at 4:30pm-6:30pm and a prayer service and Funeral mass will be held on Monday, December 6th, 2021 at 12:30pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby, BC. V5G 3M1.

There's a crack in our hearts that will never completely heal now. Aunty Janet was a beloved sister, aunty and 'Yi Po' to our family, and even though we are hundreds of miles apart, we still felt close to her. She was an inspiration in her strength in fighting her health battles, her abundant love and protective instincts over her children, her wisdom in giving us advice, and her generosity towards us whenever we got the chance to meet. We wish we could have seen her just one more time! We miss her very, very much. We will never forget her.

Love,
Susan

Dear Auntie Janet,

You have always been a role model to me. As a friend of Catherine, I have witnessed your strength, generosity, and care for others to your family, friends and others surrounded by you, during good and difficult times.

I have been fortunate to be a part of your family gatherings over the years and enjoyed learning about your upbringings, struggles, and resourcefulness as a mother. You will forever be missed and remembered by our family.

Best,
Athena, Duncan and Thomas

I was in Vancouver with Selena Vera Hey in the year 2013. Auntie Janet and Auntie Rosemary took care of me very well. Auntie Janet was very hospitable and caring. She made sure that we had a good time and get the best of Vancouver. It is a pity that she left us so early. Please take care.

Janet had always been a resourceful friend and a big sister to me. She was the first few persons I had met when I arrived in Winnipeg in 1983. There was a time when we were sitting in the committee of the Malaysian Singaporean Student Association. She had always been the one leading our meetings, and would always come up with ideas and solutions through many of our challenges! Besides the fighter’s spirit within her, she would also display her tender and caring sides by teaching us how to cook and bake with our limited budget. In 1991, when I moved to Vancouver, Janet welcomed me with her lovely family, and helped me to settle down in a city I had never been. My experience of life in Canada would be very different without her! From her, I had learned that life was not perfect, but we could make it perfect. Goodbye, my dear friend and sister! You will be dearly missed, and will always be a beacon shining deep in my heart!

Janet and I met when our children Jeffrey and Rebecca were attending Brentwood Park School. I found Janet to be a very family oriented lady. I always admired Janet for her determination in getting what she needed to keep her family moving forward. Janet and I enjoyed many good conversations concerning our children . I am saddened to hear of Janet's passing. Her presence upon Earth will be missed.
