Stephen Shek Kau Chow was born on March 20, 1936 to Mr. Chow Lei Waa & Mrs. Soo Yew How. They lived in the village of Har Hang Bin, Guangzhou and Moved to Hong Kong in 1956. At the age of 20, he went to work as a company cook for a painting company.
He met Annie in October 1959 through mutual family relatives. They courted for 2 months and got married on December 09, 1959 in Hong Kong. They returned to Vancouver and lived in his Grandfather’s house on Powell Street. He took English language lessons for the next 2 years. After 1 year of English lessons, he was able to find work with the Bamboo Terrace Restaurant as a cook.
In October 1962, Annie and Stephen were able to borrow enough money from family & friends to buy a grocery store in South Surrey and they named the store Stephen’s Market. They had to work very hard to earn enough money to repay their family & friends. They then sold the business in 1971 and Stephen worked for his brother-in-law, Howe Wong in Cloverdale. Farming was also hard work but it gave him the time to be with his family and visit relatives and friends. Every Christmas, he would take his family on vacation to places like California, Hawaii, Ontario & Alberta. In 1981, they bought a 2 acre farm on 64 Avenue in Surrey. Finally he was able to farm & live his life at his own pace and he continued to travel with his wife to hot destinations every winter. In 2015, he sold the farm and retired.
