Born November 3rd, 1944 in Vancouver, passed away January 17th, 2011 surrounded by her family.
Susan was a wonderful wife, mother, nana and friend. Her loving parents Syd and Marguerite Vernon and sister Sydney Rita Cooper predecease her. She is survived by her spectacular husband of 45 years, Ronald James; her three beautiful daughters Stephanie, Alison (Dana Wojtas), Unity (Leslie); as well as, her two adoring grandchildren Zoe and Nolan. She leaves behind three dearly loved animals – Swoozy, Link and her beloved Koko.
Susan was a woman of varying passions and talents. She was an accomplished equestrian in her youth being among the top riders in BC and even a Rodeo Princess. She was an elementary school teacher before she began her family in the early 70’s. Her aptitude for business was proven in her involvement with Auto Marine Electric and U the life accessory store. A natural capacity for quality design was demonstrated throughout her life in each of the houses she built and renovated, ensuring each space welcomed all. Her force as an advocate came to fruition later as she contributed, through various groups, to improving the lives of individuals living with disabilities and their families.
A celebration of life will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard Street, Vancouver on Wednesday, January 26th at 2:00pm. A reception will follow at the rooftop of Hotel Vancouver, 900 West Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network (PLAN), a family-led organization founded to secure the future for people with disabilities (http://www.plan.ca); or, The Syd Vernon Fund for the Disabled founded by Susan, supporting the developmental/physically disabled (www.vancouverfoundation.ca/sydvernon) held at Vancouver Foundation; or, the Callenish Society, an organization dedicated to improving the emotional & spiritual health of our communities by assisting families with cancer (http://www.callanish.org).
