It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Wai “Winnie” Kam Hui on May 7, 2025 in Surrey, B.C. Winnie was born April 7, 1931 in Guangzhou and immigrated to Vancouver,Canada in 1956 to join her family. It was in Canada that she met her future husband, Lin “Cheong” Hui, and they married in 1959. She was predeceased by her husband, Lin Cheong Hui and parents Poy Lan Chow and Mei Ying Leong. She is survived by her brother Tim Chan (nephews Johnny and Michael), children Steven (Dorothy), Ellen (Bob), Bobby (Tammy) and Tony (Cheney) and one great-grandchild, Tosh. Winnie enjoyed spending time with her 8 grandchildren Shannon (Derek), Sonya, Christina, Kathryn, Taylor (Zachary), Brandon, Allison and Parker. She has cousins and relatives in the US and in China.
Winnie and Cheong started their family business 99 Nursery on May 6, 1964. The business still thrives with her sons, Bobby and Tony, taking over the business in 2013. She was very proud to have seen a third generation, several grandchildren, start working at the Nursery in recent years.
Winnie was a very hard worker raising her family and working at the Nursery. She enjoyed entertaining and was a wonderful cook whether it was for 2 people or 40 people. The Chinese New Year was very much celebrated as she cooked all the traditional dishes for New Year’s Eve and again for New Year’s Day. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the Hoy Clansman and the Chau Luen Societies. Winnie believed in helping and sharing with others. Her bountiful garden provided many fresh vegetables for the dinner table, and her produce was shared with friends/relatives and occasionally donated to be sold at charity fundraisers.
Winnie and Cheong enjoyed driving to the United States to visit their relatives in San Francisco and Sacramento, California. While in the States they frequented Reno many times to gamble and enjoy the cuisine with her aunt, Dak Jan Chu, and cousin Doris (Jack). As they grew older they continued to visit, taking a chartered bus to Reno and meeting her relatives.
Winnie moved into a nursing home, Guildford Seniors Village, in July of 2021. She lived there until her recent passing. It became her new home and she especially enjoyed being able to roam around freely and partake in social activities. The family took Winnie for many outings back to her home and the Nursery. She especially enjoyed going out for drives developing a fondness for coffee and muffins/pies at Tim Hortons or McDonald’s.
The family would like to express our gratitude to Dr. De Cesare, the nurses and all the support staff at Guildford Seniors Village who provided wonderful care to Winnie from her very first day to the very last days. They were kind, attentive and patient. We are forever grateful. The family would also like to thank the staff at Surrey Memorial Hospital for their care and attention during the visits when Winnie needed extra care.
The funeral for Winnie will be held Thursday May 29th at 1:00pm at the Ocean View Funeral Home Chapel. 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby followed by interment at Ocean View Cemetery.
