Born Wei Shil Mah, March 8th, 1935, he grew up with his older sister in Canton, China and after graduation the family moved to North America, with his sister settling in Boston and him in Cranbrook, BC.
In October 1960 his fiancée, Wai Fong Lee, arrived from Canton and on November 14th, 1960 they were married. In Canada they took the names Henry and Linda.
Together they raised 5 children, Grant, Ada, Ava, Albert and Johnny. The family moved from Cranbrook to Penticton and finally settled in Vancouver. He bought a home in Vancouver and a restaurant in New Westminster. A few years later he bought a second restaurant on East Broadway in Vancouver where he cooked and Linda waitressed, and the kids helped out.
It was a busy life but he found time to take his family on numerous vacations, with many California trips. Later in life he would travel to Boston, DC, New York, Hong Kong and The Philippines.
In 1985 he became Gong Gong. He ended up with 5 grandchildren and almost every weekend there would be one or two spending the weekend at his house. They did this into their teen years, and loved Gong Gong and Nanna's.
In 2011 he welcomed his first great grandchild Isaac and 5 years later great granddaughter, Winter.
He had a long life with so many blessings and a few hard knocks along the way. He rarely complained, was very kind and generous, funny, and was content in life. Last spring when he fell and broke his hip Ada asked him if he was afraid ... He said no, “because of Easter.”
Enjoy your rest, Dad. Give Mom and Daniel a kiss from all of us.
