OBITUARY
Yan Shun Edmund Cheung
September 5, 1931 – December 20, 2020
Edmund Yan Shun CHEUNG, JP
Yan Shun is survived by his wife: Frances; children: Yvonne, Edmund (Jr), Conrad; siblings: Ruby, David; grand-children: Damian, Kasper, Lukas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Edmund is preceded in death by his eldest sister, Nancy.
Born on 5th September 1931 in Hong Kong, Yan Shun was the youngest of four children. In the mid-50’s he travelled by ship to London, England for law school. On his return to Hong Kong, as his cargo ship was rounding the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa (due to the Suez Canal crisis), he received news that he had passed his law exams.
He articled at Johnson, Stokes & Master and opened his firm Edmund Cheung & Co. in 1960. As there were less than 100 solicitors in Hong Kong, the opening of a law firm was big news. He retired in the early 90’s and immigrated to Canada. Today, Edmund Cheung & Co. is headed by senior partner Raymond Yip.
Yan Shun served on the Council of The Law Society of Hong Kong for 20 years and was President from 1979 to 1981. In 2008, his contribution was recognised by his peers and was admitted as the eleventh member to the Roll of Honour of The Law Society. He was also appointed a Magistrates’ Court judge on a part-time basis during his career.

We must remember Edmund was the creator and founder of the Solicitors Professional Scheme. Without his foresight, commitment and determination the Scheme would never have come into existence. It is a great loss to the profession.

My condolences to his family.
I and Edmund were professional and personal great friends. Professionally we both served on the Council of The Law Society for many , many years. During his time on the Council, he did contribute a great deal to the Society. When I was once on the panel of the Society for Nomination of the Roll of Honour, both the then Chairman and I did have him in mind.
Personally, we both were in the group of about 10 solicitors for lunch weekly also for many years. Our children of both of us had their education in London at the same time and had many things in common.
I shall miss him for a very long, long time.
