It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Yau Chuen (Clara) Chan, 91, of Richmond BC. Clara passed away on December 4th, 2023 after a battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time she passed.
Clara was born on December 2, 1932 to Mr. and Mrs. Cheung Chung Man in Hong Kong. After finishing school, she continued her education in a nursing school program at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in Hong Kong where she would meet many of her lifelong friends. While working as a nurse in Hong Kong, she met a handsome man, To Sang (Sam) Chan and they married in January of 1962. Together, they immigrated to Canada with their family including their daughter and their son Kevin in 1967. They made their home in Saskatchewan, first in Grenfell, then in Esterhazy where they owned successful restaurant and hotel businesses. The family then moved to BC in 1978 and have made Richmond their home ever since. Clara worked for a few years at St. Vincent's Hospital before retiring. Together with her husband Sam, they enjoyed many years of traveling and exploring all parts of the world. They especially loved seeing the world from cruise ships and there were not many places that they have not visited in their travels. She had a special love for all foods and had planned to take everyone to dim sum after she got better. Most importantly, she appreciate the life that her husband Sam had given to her.
Clara leaves behind many people that love her dearly. Her immediate family include her sisters, her son Kevin and his wife Tammy, her grandsons Anthony, Tyler and Stephan and their spouse/ partners Natalie, Danielle and Alicia. Clara's extended family members were also very important to her and she held them all very near to her heart. They include Nicole who she regarded as her daughter, her husband Morgan and their sons Lucas and Gavin, also Marion, Alma Rosa, Benedict and Anne, Esther, Betty and Michael, her lifelong school friends, and her family at North Richmond Alliance Church. There are countless more people who have touched Clara's heart at some point of her life. We thank each and every one of you for being a part of her life. We are all so fortunate to have had the honor to meet this amazing woman.
Clara was so grateful to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Richmond General Hospital, BC Cancer Vancouver, Salvation Army Rotary Hospice House, and the VCH care aids that came to take care of her.
Clara is predeceased by her loving husband To Sang Chan, her dog Kimo that she loved so much, and her sister Agnes. We know that she missed them very much. In our sadness, it is comforting to know that she is with them now.
The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at 1pm, in the chapel at Ocean View Funeral Home at 4000 Imperial Street in Burnaby.
In lieu of flowers, donations to BC Cancer Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
