Our beloved mother, Yin Hung So, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the age of 83, shortly after enjoying her breakfast at home. She is survived by her son, Tak Lun, and daughters, Winnie, Carrie, and Connie. In the final year of her life, she found peace and rest, surrounded by her loved ones.
She is predeceased by her husband Sik Ho So (2022). Born on April 24, 1942, in Guangdong, China, Yin Hung has led a truly remarkable life. As a student, she served as “da-dui-zhang” (Student Council President) and was also a star athlete. During her youth, she trained in nursing, circuitry, and mechanics as part of the Work-Study movement. She often spoke with fondness about her time working at the post office where she formed lasting friendships. Few years after marrying, she moved to Hong Kong with her two eldest children, seeking a better future. It was there that she reunited with our father. As a new immigrant in Hong Kong, she re-started her career with a position at Crocodile Garments factory. She later transitioned to support her husband in expanding their watchmaking business. During that time, she welcomed two more children. In 1989, after visiting Vancouver for Expo 86, she made the life-changing decision to immigrate with the family to Vancouver, BC, where she felt she could finally “enjoy being a mom.”
Yin Hung, affectionately known as Eliza, had a natural talent for whatever she set her mind to. She excelled in a wide range of hobbies, from cooking and gardening to photography, Chinese opera, singing and dancing. Alongside raising four children, she was also a proud mother to two beloved pets: Phoebe, a devoted German Shepherd, and Rikimaru, a charming Shiba Inu.
In her final years, even as her health declined, she faced each day with quiet courage. Even on the hardest days, her fighting spirit never faded. It was evident to those around her that she stayed strong and never gave up. On behalf of our mother, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the positive impact you’ve had on her life, no matter how small. After enduring four strokes and multiple hospitalizations, she struggled to stay connected with many of you, but please know that each of you remained close to her heart.
