Passed away on November 5, 2010
Benjamin Barnard Spears died at age 74 on November 5, 2010 after a courageous two year battle with cancer. He was born January 10, 1936 in Austin, Texas to Benjamin Madison Spears and Jewel Barnard Spears.
He was preceded in death by his parents, half-brother Fred Ideus, brother-in-law Wilton Miles, sister-in-law Jodi Hathaway and brother-in-law Curtis Hathaway. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Pauline, daughter Paula Ann Wood and husband Randy of Charlotte, NC, son Jeffery Barnard Spears of Sunrise Beach and grandsons Zachary and Joshua Wood; brothers Gene Spears of Henderson, NV, Dwight Spears of Austin, sisters Julia Miles of Buda and Frances Green and husband Larry of Waynesville, NC and brother-in-law John Hathaway and wife Jana of Round Rock. Ben is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Ben spent 4 years in the Air Force and retired from the Post Office after 35 years of employment. Ben and Pauline retired from Austin to Burnet in 1997. Ben’s greatest joy in life was the love he shared with Pauline. Their bond was unbreakable and they were rarely apart. Ben enjoyed football and was an avid tennis player for many years. Ben enjoyed gathering with friends and family for barbeques and watching the Dallas Cowboy football games.
A memorial service in celebration of Ben’s life was held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 7, 2010 at the Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet. In keeping with Ben’s wishes for cremation, there will be no formal visitation.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Cancer Center of Marble Falls for the best ever chemo nurse, Tanya, and to Dr. Preston and staff; also to the many friends and family that have supported and visited Ben and Pauline, especially in recent years of illness. The family also thanks Encompass Home Care nurses, especially Mike Taylor and to Lighthouse Hospice and Vickie Thompson, the most kind and caring nurse.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. For those desiring, please visit www.clementswilcoxburnet.com to share thoughts and memories with the family
