Cary Scott Gollnick, age 73 of Bertram passed away Friday, June 4, 2021 at Seton Williamson Hospital in Round Rock. He was born March 21, 1948, in Houston to mother and father Billie Boyett Gollnick and Scott Alvin Spradlin.
Cary graduated from Memorial High School in 1966 and later married his wife of 54 years Susan McFarland Gollnick, his High School sweetheart, in December 1966. During his youth he was an avid Golden Gloves Boxer and straight pool enthusiast. He also during his youth worked at a horse stable in Houston where he developed his love for horses.
He joined the US Army and attended Officer Candidate School at Ft. Sill Oklahoma where he earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He later deployed to Vietnam and was a Forward Observer with the 4th Army Artillery Division. During his time there he earned the Purple Heart for injuries received from wounds by artillery fragments and small arms fire.
In 1979 he and Susan migrated to Bertram that he was proud to call home. In the 1980’s he enjoyed coaching in the Bertram Little League and in Junior League Football. He was an active hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman, and horse enthusiast. He much enjoyed cooking and loved to grill and barbecue for family and friends.
Cary was a Master Plumber by trade but spent the majority of his career as a Quality Control Inspector for Hensel Phelps Construction, working on projects including the White Sands Missile Base in Alamogordo, NM. and the MD Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston. He retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers in 2013.
Surviving family include his wife Susan, sons Chris Gollnick and wife Rachel of Katy and Clint Gollnick and wife Stephanie of Georgetown. Also surviving are his mother Billie, 7 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. Cary was preceded in death by his father Scott Spradlin and a brother Steve Gollnick.
A family gathering and military honors for Cary will be held at a later time at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family asks that memorial contributions in memory of Cary should be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston.
