Richard M. Lowery passed away on Sunday September 19, 2021 at the age of 74, just shy of his 75th birthday. Richard was born in Monahans, TX on October 10, 1946 to Jessie James and Dimples Lowery. Richard grew up in Odessa, TX and graduated from Odessa High School in 1965. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1968 during the Vietnam War. He served 2 tours in Vietnam and earned several medals of Honor in the 4 years of service to his country. He was a proud Vietnam vet and he loved his country deeply. April 19, 1978 was the greatest day ever for Richard, his precious baby girl was born, Sonja Lowery. Sonja was his pride and joy and that relationship was two sided. Richard was also Sonja’s pride and joy and her rock. Richard was her prayer partner for any little or big thing that life threw their way. In the summer of 1984, Richard started his 22-year career with the United States Postal Service in Austin. He transferred to Burnet in 1985. He was a route carrier until his retirement in 2008. Richard was the friendliest mailman that always had a candy for the kids and his route customers. He was loved by all. He was very faithful visiting and helping out all of his friends daily at the Oaks Nursing Home. All the patients loved seeing him walk through the doors. He was a blessing to them and they were a blessing to him. He was a helping hand to so many in the Burnet community. He loved the Burnet Bulldogs and hardly missed a game with his best friend Jerry Hutson. They were also super fans of the Texas Longhorns. They had the opportunity to attend several Texas Longhorn games. He was an active member at The First Assembly of God Church in Burnet. He was a godly man and loved the Lord with all his heart. Richard is survived by his precious daughter Sonja Lowery of Midland, sister Jackie Jones and husband Ronnie of Odessa, nephew Michael Munguia of Midland, niece Jaclyn Kemp of Odessa, great nephews Mason and Morgan Munguia, great niece Hannah Bell Wade, stepson Werner Sternitzke of Dublin, stepdaughter Renee Clady of New Carlisle, IN and many cousins. Last but not least, his precious dogs (the boys) Cody and Jody. Richard is preceded in death by his parents J.J. and Dimples Lowery, sister Judie Munguia and his lovely wife, whom he loved dearly Alice Lowery. Dad! You were the best Dad ever! I knew I could count on you for anything and everything! You were my rock for everything! You had to be my mom and my dad, we had such a special bond for a father and daughter! God really knew what he was doing when he gave me you to be my dad! I will never forget the last 7 hours we had together! You were so strong and sweet! You held my hand, gave me all the winks, and told me you loved me so much and that you were so proud of me. I will never forget every time we talked you would always I love you baby girl and I am so very proud of you! What I would give to hear you tell me that one more time! The Longhorn games will not be the same without you, we would always text back and forth or call each other and then call each other at halftime and after the game, we would either be happy or mad! I am so proud of you dad for being the best Christian dad, fighting for your country, being a great friend to so many, and helping out so many. I know you are in your Big Mansion in Heaven and you will Always Be My Gradian Angel, until I am up with you forever!! I love you so much, more than you love me!!
Love,
Your daughter Sonja!!

We've been friends since Feb. 1976. We shared our partying years together. We grew up and had families of our own. Our families camped together every summer for years. Our daughters grew up like sisters. We went to church together when we lived in Burnet. These past few years we've shared so many laughs over the phone, reminiscing. We shared our love for the Lord. And my comfort is knowing that you're with Him now, Rich. I am really going to miss you. YOU were a dear and true friend. I love you, Sam

I was a co worker of Richard’s for 11 years and was super sad to hear this news. I loved him dearly and he called me Memaw and I will miss seeing him. He always had a smile and a big hug for me. My heart goes out to his family ❤️

I have loved Rich for nearly 40 years and when we gathered to play cards we never laughed so much. Once Rich brought his boom box and when we didn't know he pushed record, about an hour later he pushed play, we all were in hysterics over our previous conversations I still laugh about that day. love always, Dorothy

Rich was a fellow letter carrier when we worked together at the Burnet Post Office. I remember the good times we had working together. He was a very caring person and made lots of friends.

While we are greatly saddened with Rich's passing, we know EXACTLY where he is now. Sonya, he was so proud of you and didn't mind telling anyone. He had a genuine love for his family and friends, Postal customers, Longhorns and Bulldogs, oh, and he never met a cup of coffee he didn't love! Lots of good memories of the years we shared at the Burnet Post Office.
We love you buddy!
