Sylvia Marie Arthur Glimp, age 79 was born July 24, 1939, to Cecil Arthur and Ruth Speights Arthur in West, Texas. Sylvia, as she was proud to tell, was the last born of 17 brothers and sisters. She graduated Rosebud High School where she lettered in band playing the bass clarinet. She then moved to Austin, Texas where she met her soul mate and her Knight in Shining Armor, Harry Glimp. As the story goes, Sylvia was on a date with her roommate at Dessau Dance Hall and Sylvia's date had too much to drink, so Harry stepped in to dance. The rest is history. They married shortly after and were together until Harry's death in 1998. Sylvia was a devoted wife and mother to her two sons Mike and Steve. And if you did not know it, she and Steve share the same initials, SMG. Sylvia always pushed her boys to excel in school and fine arts, hence piano and art lessons. Sylvia was actively involved in Scouting where she helped both boys earn their Eagle Scout Award. While raising two boys and caring for her husband, she enrolled in and graduated from the University of Texas and began teaching, her lifelong passion. Shortly after retiring from teaching in the Burnet ISD, Sylvia was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, a disease she struggle with until her death.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, eleven half brothers and sisters and her husband Harry. She is survived by her sisters, Neva Skrabanek, Martha Jane Green, Carolyn Ivy and her husband Jerry, by her brother Robert (Bobby) Arthur and wife Shirley, her two sons, Mike Glimp and his wife Tracie and Steve Glimp and his wife Nila. Six grandchildren, Andrew Glimp, Cindy Davis and her husband Justin, Nicholas Glimp, Lora Glimp, Mitchell Glimp and Doug Glimp. Also surviving are six great grandchildren and numerous niece and nephews.
A graveside service was held at 11am Thursday, September 20th at the Bethel Cemetery with Reverend LC “Buddy” Johnston officiating.
