On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Walter “Scooter” Reed, Jr. reached his lifelong goal of going to be with his Lord and Savior. To say that he will be missed is an understatement. He has touched more lives than can be imagined. He lived his life for Jesus and influenced many others to accept Jesus into their hearts.
Scooter was born on August 28, 1945, to Walter and Emma Jewel Reed in Big Spring, TX. A few years later, they moved to Levelland, TX, where he spent his youth before attending college. He was passionate about sports; baseball, basketball, football, and golf. The Reeds were highly devoted and always involved with the First Baptist Church of Levelland. At the age of 7, his mother died following an extensive battle with cancer. He has always looked forward to the day when they would be reunited. Scooter was an outstanding athlete and would later attend Texas A&I University in Kingsville on a golf scholarship.
Scooter’s life changed forever when he met the love of his life, Harriett Whorton, while attending Texas A&I. They were married on 8/20/1966 for 60 amazing years and have been an inspiration/example for all who have known them. There is not a more genuine, devoted love than that which they have shared. In their early lives, they lived in several locations, beginning in south Texas, then venturing out to the east and west coasts, as he pursued his career in life insurance.
While in Los Angeles, they welcomed their only child, Zack. After a year, they realized they needed to get back to Texas and relocated to Waco. Scooter worked for Lincoln National Life in Waco for 2 years before moving to Ft. Worth with the company. Soon after this time, he would branch off with his own insurance agency, Walter Reed and Associates. Life lived in Ft. Worth was filled with adventure and many opportunities. He was deeply involved in the community and Zack’s activities, which included school, numerous sports, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Scooter also devoted time to the Southwest High School Football Booster Club, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, TCU Frog Club and others. He was a pillar of strength, love and inspiration to so many youths. He even coached Zack’s soccer team, a sport he knew nothing about, but they won because everyone wanted to play for him and give their best. His magnetic personality was an instant attractor to all; he could light up the room. Of course, Christmas has always been very special for Scooter. He made time for Santa appearances for several years. Again, another opportunity to connect with people of all ages regarding the meaning of Christmas. He continued to grow in his faith at South Hills Christian Church, serving as a deacon and board member.
In 1991, Scooter was offered an opportunity to build an annuities division for Financial Industries Corp., who he worked for during their time outside of Texas. This prompted a move from Ft. Worth to Austin, where he enjoyed great success and developed many relationships. This was a special time, as he was able to live in Bertram, where his parents were raised.
In 2002, Scooter’s faith called him to the ministry at the First Christian Church in Stratford, TX. He was passionate about his congregation and service to the Lord. His enthusiasm and love for others were clear, he was gladly available to all at any time or day. His involvement in the Stratford community included ALL groups and organizations. Scooter and Harriett later moved to Brady, where he served at the First Christian Church, to be close to family and retired in 2010.
Retirement brought Scooter and Harriett back to Burnet, where they enjoyed being surrounded by friends and family. Scooter continued to be such a bright light, even amid health concerns. Scooter transitioned to a life of summers in the pool and welcoming any opportunity to have a gathering. He loved the First Baptist Church of Burnet and continued to watch online, when he became unable to attend. His faith and love for Jesus is strong and will continue for eternity, so we rejoice and have peace.
The memorial service in celebration and honor of Scooter’s life was held on Saturday, October 10 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Burnet. Burial of his urn will take place privately at Capital Memorial Park in Pflugerville.
It is requested that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church in Burnet.
