Charles Van Solkema, age 98, went home to be with his Lord Friday, February 13, 2026. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Van Solkema; son, Gerald Van Solkema; and parents Edward and Dorothy Van Solkema. He will be remembered by his daughter, Sue Van Solkema; daughter-in-law, Judy Van Solkema; grandchildren Sarah Van Solkema (Jeff Selph), Jenny Volz (Robert Volz), Jeff Teed (Megan Teed); great-grandchildren RJ Volz, Jakob Selph, Leila Volz, Jaxon Selph; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Charles’ incredible life spanned 98 years, yet for a man of such grace who left such an impact, his departure feels premature. Up until the end, Charles maintained his kindness, grace, empathy, love for family and friends, and gratitude for those who were blessed enough to share in his life.
Charles valued hard work and dedication. From his role as a farmer and concurrent manufacturing job at Kelvinator, to his most valued calling as husband, father, and later, grandfather, he gave his all. He also held a foundational role as a charter member of Byron Center Bible Church in Byron Center, Michigan. In his spare time, he was a talented wood craftsman, loved to fish and spend time outdoors, and was rejuvenated from time spent with his family. He cherished frequent evenings he would invite family into his home for coffee, family trips, and playing outside with his grandkids.
He was an alumnus of Grandville High School, a school which his children, and later his grandchildren, would attend. Charles made a beautiful life in Grandville, where he shared more than 60 years of wedded bliss with his true love, Doris, raised his two children, and eventually was able to live next door to his grandchildren, whom he saw almost daily.
Charles’ greatest legacy will be the light he left behind. He was a rare genuine blend of godliness, strength, integrity, honesty, dedication, humor, and love. He was intentional in his walk with the Lord, leading to unity and lasting love in his marriage and care and dedication to his children. It gave him strength and consistency in his work, and pleasure in his hobbies. He was a person of genuine character who will be missed greatly and remembered always.
Visitation with friends and relatives will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th Street SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. A celebration of Charles’ life will commence 11 a.m. Thursday, February 19, 2026, with visitation one hour prior, at Byron Center Bible Church, 8855 Byron Center Ave. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. Pastor Ron Tuinstra will be officiating.
