Born on April 15, 1947, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dave lived a life marked by service, dedication, and quiet strength. A proud U.S. Army veteran (1966 - 1969), he served during the Vietnam War as a co-pilot and navigator of the OV-1 Mohawk reconnaissance aircraft—a role he carried out with skill, courage, and commitment.
After returning home from Vietnam, Dave met the love of his life, Joy. They were married on May 1, 1971, and spent the next 54 years building a life together centered on family, hard work, and shared purpose.
Dave and Joy became the owners and operators of Ironwood Golf Course, which they ran side by side for 49 years with Dave as grounds superintendent and Joy as clubhouse manager. More than a business, Ironwood became a family endeavor and a beloved part of the community. Together, Dave and Joy raised three children: Kim, Kate, and Kyle. All three grew up working at the golf course alongside their parents where they learned valuable life lessons and skills, the importance of working hard, and respect for the natural world.
Dave found peace and fulfillment in nature at a young age. He was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman throughout his life and shared many wonderful times with family and friends engaging in outdoor activities. Dave was also a skilled woodworker and craftsman, creating handcrafted pieces with care and attention to detail in his shop during the winter months and gifting them humbly.
Dave was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather. He is dearly missed by his wife, Joy; children Kim (Scott) Davidson, Kate (Drew) Hartman, and Kyle (Molly) Bradley; grandchildren Levi, Reece, and Beau Hartman, and Jack Bradley; and sisters Barb (Dan) Shonka and Judy (Greg) Ockerman. He joins in peace his parents George and Betty and his beloved canine companions, Max, Libby, BJ, and Brandy.
Dave will be remembered as a man of integrity, loyalty, and deep kindness. Known for his steady presence, quiet wisdom, humorous wit, and generous heart, Dave was a mentor and friend to many. His legacy and spirit lives on through his family, the golf course he nurtured, and the many lives he touched.
A celebration of life will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Venue Bella Giornata, 1835 84th St. SW Byron Center, Michigan. A remembrance ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m, with a reception to follow. All who knew and loved Dave are warmly invited to attend and honor his memory.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids or the West Michigan Humane Society, in honor of Dave’s service and his love of animals. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guestbook online.
