Gary Lew Benton, age 71, went to be with his Lord Saturday, January 14, 2023, Byron Center, MI. Gary was preceded in death by his parents Lew and Lorraine Benton. He will be remembered by his wife, Terry Benton; stepchildren Robin and Casey Perdok, Tara and Monty Gamble, and Chad Ver Hage; grandchildren Alexis Perdok, Brayden Perdok, Burke Gamble, and Ella Gamble; sister, Gayle and Ned Colletti of AZ; brother, Craig and Cindy Benton of IL; nieces Melissa Benton, Jenna and Chad Koskie and their children Charlotte and Jack; nephews Patrick Benton, Lou and Becky Colletti and their children Louie and Hank; and many friends.
Gary, a Vietnam veteran, was originally from Schiller Park, IL and moved to Grand Rapids, MI in the early 90s, where he excelled at a career in food management. Gary made each of his employees feel valued, but more importantly made each shift he worked the most fun. Gary enjoyed playing cards with his good friends, and late-night conversations about sports and life. He enjoyed coaching kids basketball through Upwards, and leading GriefShare at Cornerstone Church. Gary cherished time with his stepchildren and grandchildren; they meant the world to him. He leaves behind a special group of lifelong friends from Chicago; they share a bond that will never be forgotten. Gary had friends who started as coworkers, but soon became family to him. Gary touched many lives, he would brighten your day, many will cherish his memories forever.
Visitation with friends and relatives will take place from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th Street, Byron Center, MI 49315. A Celebration of Gary’s Life will commence immediately following at 2 p.m. Pastor Ken Nash will be officiating. In honor of Gary and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project - for disabled veterans.
