She will be lovingly missed by her husband of 66 years, Gerald Grasman; children Keith (Suzanne) Grasman, Karla (Curt) Eyster; grandchildren Annika Grasman, Alyssa Eyster, Amanda Grasman, Jeremiah Eyster, Kaleb Eyster; siblings Joan Nyhof, Ernie DeVries, Edward DeVries, Phil DeVries; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
After Helen’s father Clarence died during military service when she was young, her mother, Marie, married John DeVries and moved to Washington, D.C. It was there that Helen met Gerald after his college graduation, and they were married. After raising their family in D.C. and following the completion of Gerald’s federal career at the Treasury Department, they retired back to Byron Center, Michigan. Helen was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren, taking an interest in all that they did. She was a lifelong seamstress, crafter, knitter, cross-stitcher, and quilter. She was a quilting instructor and devoted much time to quilting for charitable causes. Helen was a lifelong member of several Christian Reformed churches, including a founding member of the Silver Spring Christian Reformed Church in Maryland.
Visitation with Helen’s family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, Michigan 49315. Funeral services for Helen will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at First Byron Christian Reformed Church, 8541 Byron Center Ave. SW, Byron Center, Michigan 49315.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Helen, contributions may be made to Western Michigan Quilters’ Guild or Margaret’s Hope Chest. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guestbook online.
