She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bob. Born in McBain, Michigan on August 3, 1928, Joan was surrounded by a loving family of four sisters: Betty, Verla, Jackie, and Chris; her brother, LD; and her parents Leonard and Audrey. Their family lived in Detroit, where Jo graduated from Mackenzie High School. After graduating, she and her sister, Verla, worked at Michigan Bell Telephone.
She moved to Byron Center, Michigan with her family, where she met Bob, and together they made their life for the next 73 years. Bob and Jo were married March 3, 1950, at Byron Center United Methodist Church, where they remained lifelong members. Once settled into their home, they welcomed three children: Rick, Jim, and Lori. As a family, they had many adventures in the Upper Peninsula and traveling across the country.
Jo worked for Byron Center Public Schools Administration until she retired at 58. Once retired, Jo spent countless hours working at Byron Center Ministries, serving lunches to seniors alongside her sisters, Verla and Jackie.
Jo was an accomplished artist, showing her paintings at Ludington and Pentwater Art Fairs. She taught art classes as well, which brought her great joy.
She and Bob traveled around the country with dear friends, sharing wonderful experiences and many good times.
Everyone will remember Jo for her willingness to help others. She could be counted on no matter what was needed. She truly lived a life of service to others. Her love for her husband and family was unwavering. She loved with all of her heart. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Whether it was a holiday or camping in Pentwater, she always made it a special event.
Jo has been joyfully reunited with her husband, mom, dad, sisters, granddaughter, and so many loved ones. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend everyone will deeply miss. She brought out the best in us and we’re all better people because we had her in our lives.
A private memorial service will commence Monday, August 3, 2026 at Byron Center United Methodist Church.
In Jo’s honor, the family requests contributions be made to Byron Center United Methodist Church. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guestbook online.
