Lillian was born on June 15, 1951, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Robert and Alberta Olson. She grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from Creston High School. At the age of 17, Lillian met the love of her life, Greg VanHeck, on a blind date. The two were quickly high school sweethearts, marrying in 1971. Their deep and enduring love for each other was a constant reminder of God’s intention in marriage, and they modeled what it meant to care for one another in sickness and in health.
In her younger years, her biggest joy was becoming a mother to her two daughters. Lillian poured her heart into their lives, serving as a room mom, a softball coach, and an active member of the Byron Center Sports Boosters. She took immense pride in her girls, Sarah and Stacey, and loved being a vital part of their daily lives.
Being a Nana was her favorite role of all. She never missed a dance recital, baseball game, or hockey game for her three cherished grandchildren.
Lillian will always be known for her unwavering love of God, her selflessness, her ability to care for anyone, and for always answering her phone and saying "yes" to everyone who needed her. Greg and Lillian were often found working side-by-side, whether they were doing yard work, building a retaining wall, or remodeling a bathroom, always finding that they could conquer anything together.
Our hearts are empty, but the family finds peace knowing that she is resting in the "penthouse of heaven" and that they will see her again one day.
Lillian is survived by her devoted husband of over 54 years, Greg VanHeck; daughters Sarah (Sean) Storey and Stacey (Troy) Johnson; three precious grandchildren Matthew Johnson, Morgan Johnson, and Collin Storey; sister, Sandy Burgess; and brother, Robert Olson III. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Alberta Olson.
Visitation with family and friends will be held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, November 21, 2025 at Banner of Christ Church, 1111 68th St. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. A private family service will begin at 4:30 p.m. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their online guestbook.
