Mary Ann Elzinga, age 80 from Byron Center, met her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with a sound mind and healed body, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s, on Thursday, July 16, 2026. As a dedicated bus driver for many years with Byron Center Transportation, Mary made numerous friends and connections. The “kids on the bus” loved her, as she was funny, fun, quick with a laugh, and genuinely kind.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Elzinga; Grandma Jo; and dear grandson, Joshua Elzinga. She is survived by her sons Doug (Michelle) Elzinga, Burr Elzinga; grandchildren Casey (Raelyn) Elzinga, Cody Elzinga, Savannah (Thomas Jr.) Starks; great-grandchildren Quinley Starks, Haven Starks, Sawyer Elzinga; brother, Robert (Kristi) Bredeweg; sisters Arla (Jerry) Hop, Marilyn Ball; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of Resthaven Care Center in Holland for the excellent care of Mary for many years. Also, a note of appreciation to Faith Hospice for the ministry of music they shared with Mary, which she loved until the end.
Visitation with Mary’s family and friends will be held from 4-7 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2026, at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, Michigan 49315. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Mary, contributions may be made to Byron Center Christian School or Resthaven Care Center in Holland. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guest book online.
