

Matthew Christian Schmitt, age 101, went to be with his Lord and Savior March 24, 2025. He was preceded in death by his wife and soulmate, Meredith Louise, after 49 years of marriage; longtime partner, Hildegard Honold; son, Gregory Schmitt; sister, Geraldine Friskey. He is survived by his son, Gary (Laurie) Schmitt; daughter, Patricia McLain; nine grandchildren Shawn (Scott) Gnass, Matthew (Jillian) Schmitt, Ben Schmitt, Christopher Schmitt, Brian Saindon, Carrie Saindon, Bethany (Lance) Saindon, Kyle (Melissa) Saindon, Kimberly Melton; 11 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
Matt graduated from Godfrey-Lee High School, enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and served in WWII. Upon returning home, he married, started his family, and settled in Wyoming, MI. He owned and operated his own service station and then went on to work for Lear Siegler where he worked in the test lab for many years until retirement. In retirement, he spent winters in Florida and later retired in Cadillac on Lake Mitchell where he spent time with many wonderful close friends and family. Matt was very involved with his church, VFW, and American Legion. He loved the outdoors; he enjoyed fishing, hunting, swimming, and skiing. He was also very handy working on many projects.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, Michigan, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.
