On November 17, 2023, Shannon Marie Mekkes, age 65 of Wyoming, MI, was called home by her loving Savior. By the glow of her Christmas tree, Shannon found peace wrapped tightly in the love of her family and with her beloved dog, Maggie, by her side.
Shannon, better known to those who loved her as Super Gran, lived her life for her family, especially her grandkids: Connor, Kryssy, Jackson, Tallulah, and Jolie. To know her, was to know that Connor is going to become the family’s first doctor, Kryssy has the most beautiful blue eyes, Jackson is the finest football player Byron Center has ever seen, Tallulah is her princess, and Jolie is her nugget. To be loved by her, was to feel that you were special, treasured, and that there was always someone in your corner.
Shannon married her high school sweetheart, Don, in 1976 and spent 47 years by his side. Shan and Don had the kind of marriage love songs are written about; they were soulmates, partners, and best friends. Together they raised their three children: Jaime, Jennifer, and Donnie and their bonus daughter, Stacia. Shan often said that what she was most proud of was raising her “three good kids.” What we know is that the best parts of them were actually reflections of her care and unwavering support. Shannon also cared for her mother, Ruth (94), every day since the passing of her father, Tom, 12 years ago. Her endless stories, jokes, laughter, and beautiful smile made her the life of every party and a friend to all who knew her. Shannon was preceded in death by her father, Tom O’Keefe and her sisters Stephanie DeVries and Elizabeth Stevens. Shannon’s legacy will be continued by her husband, Don; children Jennifer (Bryan) Bovia, Jaime (Mike) Kieffer, Donnie (Jessica) Mekkes; grandkids Connor and Jackson Bovia, Krystal Kieffer, Tallulah and Jolie Mekkes; mother, Ruth O’Keefe; as well as her brothers, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
