After a long and difficult illness, our beloved Susie entered her painless and glorious new home in Heaven on November 17, 2023. She was born in Jackson, Michigan November 23, 1938 to Woodward and Virginia (McLaren) Wickham. She had two brothers - Robert Buchanan and Woodward Wickham, Jr., both of whom had preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Diana (Buchanan) Meyer, who lives in Basel, Switzerland. Susie married Lyle Grover in 1960 and they had two children: Sarah Trees of Libertyville, Illinois, and John Grover (Lorraine) of Byron Center, Michigan. By them, she had several grandchildren: Joshua (Carolyn) and Savannah (Hannah) Trees, and Bryce, Jacob, Michael, Sophia (deceased), and Lia Grover. Lyle died in 1984 and Susie married Jonathan (Jon) Maire, then of Williamston, Michigan, in 1997. Jon, Sarah, John, and the grandchildren – and many other relatives and friends – lovingly treasure her memory and the memories of her unique mannerisms.
Susie attended the University of Michigan (where Lyle and Jon were fraternity brothers) and later received her nursing training from and LPN certification through Jackson Community College. Susie worked as a nurse at Foote Hospital and then as a visiting obstetrics nurse for the County of Jackson, until her retirement in 2000. She was a positive influence in the lives of many, both in her professional and personal capacities.
A memorial service, followed by a light luncheon, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Spirit of Christ Church, 8170 Coleman Road, Haslett, Michigan. Those wishing to make donations in her honor may do so to the Alzheimer’s Association, Jackson Symphony Orchestra, or Christ Church (Anglican) Savannah, Georgia. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guest book online.
